Holiday Toys: How Can You Tell the Good From the Bad?

Each year hundreds of new toys appear on store shelves. Even grocery stores are selling toys. You want to make your child's toy dreams come true, but how can you tell the good toys from the bad? These toy shopping tips will help you to make your way through crowded stores and the holidays.

EXAMINE A SAMPLE TOY. Stores may have a mountain-sized toy display, including pictures of the toy and its price, but not a sample toy you can examine. In most states retailers are required by law to display an actual sample. Ask to see a sample if none is available.

IS IT REALLY A TOY? Obvious as this question sounds, many of today's toys are passive and don't require anything from kids. A good toy asks a child do do something, such as buildng a block fort or putting a puzzle together. Toys like these stretch your child's intelligence and imagination. Buy toys that are really toys!

CHOOSE AGE APPROPRIATE TOYS. Most manufacturers print the age range of the toy on the box. Choose toys that fit your child's age, physical development, and interests. Basic toys, such as wooden blocks, are a wise purchase because they've already stood the test of time and can be passed down to younger kids.

READ THE FINE PRINT. The toy manufacturer may have put a warning on the product label. As the Carolinas HealthCare System notes on its Website, "If there's a warning, there's a reason." So check every side of the package for a warning and heed it if you see it.

CHECK MATERIALS. Some toys are made from unsafe materials. Recently The CBS Early Show Consumer Watch did a story called, "Choose Safe and Fun Toys." According to the program, necklaces and zipper pulls have been recalled because of lead poisoning risks. And the Website "Kids Health for Parents" says fabric toys should be labeled "flame retardant" or "flame resistant." Art materials should say "nontoxic somewhere on their packaging," the Website adds.

HAS THE TOY BEEN TESTED? Look carefully and you'll see that some toy packages have the letters "ASTM" on them, which means the toy has met American Socety for Testing Materials and Standards. Toys that have been tested will be safer than toys that have not.

SAFETY COMES FIRST. Never buy toys for infants and toddlers that have parts small enough to choke them. The store may have a "choke tube" tester you could use. Objects that fit in this tester are unsafe. As for older kids, be careful about buying electronic toys because some are so loud they will damage your child's hearing. Also avoid electronic toys that can shock or burn. Always buy the safety equipment that goes with the toy, such as a bike helmet.

THINK ABOUT STORAGE. Do you have room for this toy? Huge toys will just get in the way and block the room's traffic pattern. Toys that have lots of small parts can be hard to store. If you choose a toy that has lots of small parts, buy a storage bin or box at the same time. By the way, cleaning up toys is your child's responsibility, not yours.

CHOOSE WELL MADE TOYS. There are hundreds of cheap toys on the market - toys that break in record time. Nothing disappoints a child more than a broken toy. Choose toys that are made from durable materials, have smooth edges, and sturdy connections.
Look for wooden toys because they seem to be disappearing in this age of plastic.

ASK AN HONEST QUESTION. Before you buy a toy ask yourself, "Is this something my child wants or is it something I've always wanted?" Holiday toys are for kids and your joy comes from watching them open their gifts, playing with toys, and having you play with them.

Buying toys on the Internet is convenient, but it can also be risky, according to "Kids Health for Parents." The Website says Internet retailers aren't required to include information about choking hazards or the age level of the toys. It also says foreign toy manufactuers "aren't even required to meet strict U.S. regulations." So be careful about buying toys you haven't seen.

You may have purchased unsafe toys or come across them in stores. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission wants to know about these toys. To report an unsafe toy call 1-800-638-2772 or email a report to info@cpsc.gov. You may also report unsafe toys on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's Website, http://www.cpsc.gov. Internet services are available day and night.

Louis Marx Western Playsets - From Gunsmoke to Wyatt Earp

Do you aim to take a journey to the wild, wild West? The toy manufacturing firm Louis Marx and Company started making and selling its Western themed playsets in the 1950s. During this period of time, thousands of the figures were made and distributed not just in the United States but also in other countries like the United Kingdom.

Just like many toys made today, entertainment companies sought to have their numerous hit television shows and characters licensed to toy manufacturers and other companies who would then sell goods to the public like lunch boxes and the playsets made by Marx. In fact, aside from the popular toy soldier figures, Marx Western playsets became one of the flagship toys made and sold by the firm.

Even today, the popularity of Marx Western toys and figures is still huge. The toys enjoy a great following, although the usual purchasers' demographics have changed a bit over the years. The action figures that used to be played with by children are now regarded as collectors' items by collectors of all ages, especially older people who remember playing with them when they were kids. My dad remembers having a couple of different playsets since he's always been a fan of Western movies and tv shows.

While some collectors may simply display their collectible Western action figures and playsets in display cases to protect them, there are also many collectors who use them to make intricate and realistic looking dioramas. Since most of the figure are made from hard plastic, they are usually more than sturdy enough to be played with by adults who are still kids at heart.

Collectible Dolls - Mike Hazard Double Agent

In this article we're going to cover one of the rarest collectible dolls in history, the classic Mike Hazard Double Agent.

During the 1960s, cloak and dagger and spy stuff was all the wave with shows like Mission Impossible, The Man From Uncle, I Spy and of course movies like James Bond. Well, the toy companies took care of their end as well.

One of the most popular dolls of that era was Mike Hazard, Double Agent which was manufactured by Louis Mark Company in 1967. The doll was 12 inches in height and was solid as a rock. The body was made of very hard plastic. If you were to hit somebody over the head with this doll you would probably give them a concussion. This was the most solidly put together doll in the history of toy manufacturing next to professional ventriloquist dummies. The body color was a strange dark blue.

There were actually five different series of Mike Hazard dolls made in 1967. The only real differences were not so much in the dolls themselves but in the boxes. There was the original box, the sunburst box, the international box and then a couple of variations of the three of them.

The lure of the doll was not so much in the look of it but what you could do with it. As accessories went, Mike Hazard was loaded with them. His nickname was "master of disguise" and he was that. Included with the figure were a number of great disguises that you could mix and match in many different ways.

To start with, he came with a great blond wig. His natural hair color was dark brown. The wig didn't quite cover his hair completely so you could see some of the brown sticking out but it was still pretty cool.

Then there was the beard, mustache and glasses. This was actually one piece as the three were all attached. It was difficult using the beard and glasses with the wig because the glasses didn't fit very well over the face because of the thickness of the wig and if you tried to use them together it actually looked pretty stupid.

Then there was an actual new face that you could place over the original face. It only covered the front so that you could use the wig with it. Also, if you wanted, you could put the beard and glasses on over the new face. It just did fit.

Mike Hazard also came with a few cool hats. They wouldn't fit very well over the wig but if you used them on the original head they fit just perfectly. The hats were a beret and a Clark Kent style hat.

Hazard also came with a really nice trench coat that was made out of material, the only thing in the set that was. Everything else was made out of plastic.

As for weapons, he had weapons galore from pistols to machine guns to a futuristic gun. He also had a contraption that looked like a weapon but was actually a listening device.

Needless to say, this was one cool figure. But it didn't last long and today is considered a very rare collectors item. Mint in a sealed box will bring you about 00. Not bad for a toy.
