I have a friend whose Yours-Mine-and-Ours family has 17 children. No it's true. That's a big family, even to someone like me. I'm the eldest of ten. It's a lot of fun around Christmas time believe me. If you've never spent Christmas morning with at least six or eight hooligans who all got incredibly spoiled by Santa Claus then you haven't lived. The family room fills halfway full with the wrapping paper alone. Somewhere underneath it are ten kids and at least 30 or 40 boxes of toys, clothes, tools, and junk. There's really nothing like it.
On the other hand, mealtimes come more than once a year, and they require a lot of work to prepare, and just as much work to clean up. Trust me, I was the only one old enough to do the dishes for a long time! Did I mention we lived in a two bedroom trailer? Well we only had eight kids at the time, but still, quarters were cramped. Shelf space was limited. We didn't have much in the kitchen other than what we absolutely needed. Except a dish washer. We absolutely needed that and we didn't have it.
Plastic Toy Boxes
But get this: my friend, of the family of 17, her parents supposedly did some math and found out that it was cheaper to buy disposable plates than it was to use regular plates. They said that after buying the plates, spending money on dish soap, electricity and water for washing, and replacing broken plates, they were better off to just save the time and effort buy buying paper.
I sure wish MY parents had figured that out. Would have saved me a lot of time washing dishes!
She said their secret was buying in bulk. Not just 'head to Walmart and buy the biggest bag or paper plates you can find' bulk. I mean BULK! They'd go online and get those little nacho's cup/bowl thingies that vendors use. And they'd get them in bags of 1000. At mealtimes they would load the kids up with their nachos (or whatever else they might be eating in their nacho bowls I assume) and once the bowl was empty into the trash it would go. Simply. Clean. Cheap.
Now I'm not suggesting you and your family sell off the china and resort to nacho bowls. But I think there are things to be learned from my friend's family. Buying in bulk IS a rather good idea. And disposable is certainly a far sight easier than washing.
For our families every day was a party. For you, maybe not so often. But when you do have a party, why not save a lot of clean up time by throwing away the plates?
Party plates are many and varied. There are countless themes for children's birthday parties. You can buy paper plates featuring everything from Superman to Gone With the Wind. Every color of the rainbow is available for your bridal or baby shower. Even for something as fancy as a wedding reception, there are some pretty nice looking plastic plates. Browse around online at some party supply warehouses and you'll see what I mean. And when you buy plates in bulk you'll be saving a ton of money.
