What's all the fuss about rabbit toys? Surely your bun is happy in her cage with something to chew and something to eat?
Well no, these days we've realised that our rabbits need more than just the basic necessities of food, shelter and water. They also need to keep mentally and physically active and toys play a crucial role in both of these. Let's look at why:
Plastic Toy Boxes
Exercise
No, we don't mean take your bun out on a leash here, although some owners do train their rabbits to walk in a harness and leash. Playing is bunny speak for exercise. They don't need a structured walk like a dog does, just getting out of their cage and jumping over small obstacles, or running after a ball is enough for them.
If your cage is not big enough for your bunny to do a lot of running around (and most cages would fall into this category) then ensure your bun gets out of her cage for at least 2 hours of exercise a day so she can have a good run, jump and play with her toys.
Some rabbits even get good enough to do bunny agility!
Mental Stimulation
Playing with toys stimulates your rabbit's mind. Whether she is navigating turns in a cardboard box maze, nudging a ball towards you or tossing baby teething keys in the air it is all exploring her world and that keeps her actively engaged in her environment. A rabbit that is happy in her surroundings is less likely to get depressed and/or resort to destructive behaviour such as excessive chewing or digging.
Toys don't have to be expensive or even store bought. Just ensure whatever you choose is non-toxic (in case it's chewed) and doesn't have small parts that could choke your bun. Some great ideas are cardboard boxes full of crunchy leaves, old phone directories with the hard cover torn off, Saran Wrap tubes stuffed with hay, baby teething rings/keys (the hard plastic ones) or a sturdy cardboard/wooden 'digging' box full of sand or dirt.
So, next time you're in the supermarket, pet store or even hanging out at home, have a look around and see if you can come up with some fresh, new ideas for toys for your rabbits. If you've got kids get them to join in and make it a game to see who can be the most creative.
Your bun will appreciate you taking the time to make her environment a stimulating, happy place to be!
